COVID 19 IRRIGATION – MONDAY 27TH APRIL

COVID 19 IRRIGATION – MONDAY 27TH APRIL

With a sum total of 7mm rainfall on the golf courses over the past 35 days it’s fair to say we are drying out a little. However this is where our new Rainbird automatic irrigation system has really proven to be a sound investment. The coverage the new system provides our putting surfaces with is second to none, ensuring a consistent amount of water across the complete surface area. This together with water management products (wetting agents) and spot treating localised dry spots with hand hoses, allow us to balance moistures in the target area of 20-25% volumetric water content.

Not only are we keeping adequate water on the greens, but tees, approaches and fairways too, as well as the 500m2 of new turf laid out during the winter period also requires hand-watering with a hose as shown by Gary above. The newly laid winter turf is particularly vulnerable to drought as the root system has not yet fully developed, by spot treating these areas; we ensure no turf is lost to drought. Irrigation is one of the most important areas of turf management, it is vital we keep on top of any moisture deficit or we risk losing coverage. I am happy to say we are winning the battle so far this year.
