Ladies getting into golf

Three weeks into the sessions, the five ladies on the Get into Golf are progressing well and it has been great to see them out practising in between the sessions.

Head professional Jason Boyd maintains it won’t be long until the class of 21 rivals the ladies from 2020.

We are looking at dates for starting the next programme soon, hopefully aligned with the better weather.

No equipment is needed as everything will be provided for these sessions. And please do pass this information on to anyone you think might be interested.

Five rounds and more

Four of our female season ticket holders are playing 100 holes round the Broomfield Course tomorrow (Friday 30 April), starting at 7am in the morning.

The four ladies – all members of Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf Club sub-committee – are Doreen Leask (ladies captain), Edna Wallwork (vice captain), Lynn Coull (match & handicap secretary) and Ruth Clark (treasurer).

The ladies will have buckets for donations, and a bottle raffle and tablet will also be on sale at the Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf Club.

The money raised will be donated to Montrose Community Trust which engages with over 1,000 people each week from the age of 1 to 90.

Montrose Community Trust supports the most disadvantaged in our community, such as those who are unemployed, facing food insecurity, living with dementia, living in isolation or suffering with poor mental health.

We would kindly ask members playing the Broomfield tomorrow to allow the ladies to play through. This will help them get their five rounds plus 10 holes completed.

Order of Merit

We have launched the pro shop Order of Merit for 2021 and the top prize is your season ticket for 2022.

You can find all the information here.

And if you’d like to find out more about season ticket holder competitions, all the details and dates can be read here.

The future of golf

Golphin junior golfWe now have 32 children between the ages of four and 12 taking part in the Golphin for Kids programme.

The sessions are held every Monday and Thursday, as the children progress through the programme as they start their golfing journey.

Putting and chipping have been covered so far as they work towards the bronze awards on the pathway.

One more in the bag

Gordon Coull

One of our longest serving members Gordon Coull holed his nine iron at the 3rd on the 1562 course last Friday (23 April).

This gives us the seventh hole in one of the season already.

Gordon was playing with John Tasker, Andrew Carcary and Kevin Smith.

However … Gordon also holed a tee shot at the 14th on the Broomfield a couple of weeks before this so we have had eight holes in one in 2021!

Top golf balls

We asked our members what their favourite golf ball was.

Titleist may make a million golf balls a day, but that’s not swaying you. The most popular golf ball in Montrose is a Callaway.

  1. Callaway (40%)
  2. Titleist (29%)
  3. Srixon (14%)
  4. Other (10%)
  5. Bridgestone (7%)

We can also reveal the details of the new coffee machine in the pro shop. Better than that, we can show you in this short, very home-made video
